How to Read Guitar Tabs to Play the Guitar

Guitar tabs are a bit different from sheet music. Guitar tabs are a way of reading guitar music without knowing how to read sheet music. This ingenious system was designed to make reading guitar tab easy for the common person. Sheet music has five lines and four spaces. Guitar tabs are like recipes; the chords are the ingredients. The experienced musician can sit down with \"Stairway to Heaven\" and figure out what the chord progressions are without being able to read sheet music. Guitar tabs are great tools. Use them for what they are. They are not sheet music but will allow you to strum out a song on the guitar.

Guitar tabs are constructed by taking the notes and playing them on a sheet with six lines that generally represent the standard six-string guitar. They then transcribe the notes onto these lines that represent the strings of the guitar and correlate to which string the note is played and on what fret. Guitar tabs are easy to read when you understand all of the different symbols and ‘markers’ used to represent what to play and how to play it. In fact, it is not usually the ‘notes’ that trip people up when they try to read guitar tabs. Guitar tabs are a simple form of transcribing music using alphanumeric characters. They are very widely available and allow even total beginners to start learning songs as it is so simple to understand.

Guitar tabs are an alternative way of writing and reading music for the guitar to standard musical notation. Guitar tabs are pretty much like sheet music, but written in an easy-to-read format that helps guitarists play music quickly and easily. People from all over the world figure out how to play songs they love, and then write down their guitar tabs.

Chords usually use the chord letters to indicate how the music must be played. Guitar tabs more or less illustrate the positioning or the placement of the fingers to achieve the desired sound. Chords are not the notes themselves, but the collection of these notes. Guitar chords only have, at most, six notes in them because guitars only have six strings.

Fingerstyle arrangements can give you some added depth to your guitar playing even if you don\'t utilize all the techniques shown in the tab. Finally there is one advantage to using acoustic tab for electric guitar players. Fingering posture and hand position are illustrated clearly.

Guitar tablature often comes with chord names and these are usually above the staff. This enables the guitarist to recognize the chords more easily. Tablature notation lacks accurate information on rhythm and timing. Tablature writers sometimes provide limited rhythmic information by adding note stems, flags and beams above the numbers but this practice is not standardized. Tablature is instrument-specific; which means that only a guitarist can read and play a guitar tab. Also, since tab notation effectively gives instructions on how to play notes rather than information on how the notes will sound, it can be very difficult to get a feel of the music simply by studying the page without playing it through. Tablature is drawn as a chart using the fret board of the guitar as the background. Six lines are drawn on the chart to represent the guitar strings.
